Guide 4: - My 2.3" LCD Projector

(created by Kim Turley)

DIY Projector with 2.3" lcd screen, placed in a custom mount in a slide projector. I figured there was not much documentation on this so I would try it myself and post the results to all!

Costs:
£30 - Secondhand Casio 2.3" Portable TV
£10 - Special cable to run into the AV input of the tv
£15 - AC Power Adapter for TV
£10 - Secondhand Old Slide Projector
£65 - Total

Time:
4 hours to take apart the tv and create a mount for it and the circuit board.

The box for the Casio LCD Tv
The tv before opening commences
The box for the power adapter, bought separately
The power adapter
The box for the AV lead for the TV
The actual lead, purchased separately
The box and old and new bulbs made by philips, for the projector
Projector case opened, bulb in the middle, reflector below, condenser and lens above
Another view inside
yet another view
The old slide projector without it's back casing on. The neat thing about this one is it takes larger slides, giving more room for air and bigger lcd (possibly up to 4 or 5 inch)

another view
another view but with casing re-attached

as you can see the components are dusty....
..very dusty!
The average size of projection against wall, sorry about small pic
testing gamecube connected into the av socket of tv before taking apart
screen close-up
hitman game on the screen
and again, showing how different it looks by the cameras auto light adjustment
First part of tv casing removed with aerial and buttons
Back casing unscrewed and removed leaving the circuit board and lcd/backlight connected by a DELECATE ribbon cable
Flip side of circuit board and casing
after unplugging the DELICATE ribbon cable the screen and backlight section is separate now.
Removed tuning buttons and backlight power part (right) and the screen and casing (left)
2.3 inch lcd screen now completely apart from casing, see-through and just ribbon cable to connect it.
Size compared to my hand
showing thickness
it's very thin
plugged it back up to the circuit board and the text the gamecube again to make sure its all working
tried holding in the slide projector, tough but just to get an idea of how well it works.
holding it closer. Note the ribbon cable is the only bit holding them together, it is very small and you must not break it as you lcd will be screwed!
small results, roughly 1 foot wide on wall
these next few are me holding it and using a wall about 1.5 metres away and the images came out at roughly 0.5m wide using the big projector lens
smash brothers, note there is no frame to the lcd, need to add that later
more smash brothers, note it looked alot better but the camera takes poorly in low light hence the blur and dim picture
more smash brothers running intro, no blur in the screen at all, was very impressive
we moved it to a bigger wall, still holding it, this larger picture was about 1.5m wide at a distance of about 3 metres
my brother stands in it for size comparison
was much brighter than this, camera is bad :(
this was the stand I made to hold the lcd screen while doing some tests made out of balser wood. It is very wobbly though and needs to hold the lcd better
shot of projector with lcd in balser-wood holder
close-up of lcd in holder
looking through the lens the wrong way towards the lcd
this was an even bigger picture at roughly 2 metres wide from a distance of about 4-5 metres. Camera again fails to pick it up well.
The lcd and circuit board are being held by a balser wood structure I made, it was weak and crap, so I scrapped it
The second mount I made which meant the original casing could go back onto the tv to prevent electrocution. Lol, also I had to cut a hole for the ribbon to come through the casing.

Conclusion:
2.3" is big enough to be a good projection, BUT 40,000 pixels is not a high enough resolution. It is watchable at 0.5m wide, but as you get bigger up to 2 metres wide you can easily see pixels and so is not as good. It is very bright through a slide projector even an old one like mine, but a higher res lcd is advised for anything over 0.5 metres wide picture.
The time came in at 30 minutes before the projector gets too hot to continue, a small fan will correct this tomorrow. Images was big and bright, some very dark scenes weren't so good. The refresh rate was fast enough that on Super Smash Brothers melee we could easily play.
