Guide 2: - Making A Projector

(created by www.projectiontv.co.uk)

The List that follows are the materials that are required:

- Fresnel Lens (Recommended) or a Magnifying glass 3” or larger
- Fiberboard or cardboard
- Scissors or Craft Knife
- Ruler – This has imperial measures (e.g. Inches)
- Matt black spray or emulsion paint
- Pen or Marker pen
- Mirror

Step 1: measuring your TV or monitor.
Measure the vertical and horizontal dimensions of your TV. Measure the whole TV including casing not just the screen. The projector will be attached to this part.

Step 2: Cutting your side pieces.
Cut your side pieces( #1 and #2 ) using your vertical distance for the height and 30” for the length. 30” is a good distance to use so you can focus your projector easily. Make the cut as straight as possible, in this example I used 19”, my screen measured 19x19.

Step 3: Cutting your side pieces.
Cut your top and bottom pieces ( #3 and #4 ) using your horizontal distance measured for the width and 30” for the length.

Step 4: Preparing the slider.
Cut your slider ( #5 ). The slider is a part that will slide in and out of your projector. By adjusting the slider when the projector is finished, you will focus the picture. Cut your slider using your horizontal and vertical distances from before. Next, find the center of the slider and mark that point.

Step 5: Preparing the lens.
Remove the lens from your magnify glass and place it exactly on the center mark of your slider, use a pencil and draw around the lens so you will have a circle in the middle of the slider the same size as your lens. Cut out the hole, make it a clean cut, the lens must fit tightly in this hole. If using the fresnel lens, find the largest complete circle on the lens and cut your hole that size.

Step 6: Painting the projector.
Now that you have all your pieces cut, you will need to paint them. Lay all 5 pieces on the ground and paint them (painting both sides is recommended), once dry give them another coat. This is a very important part of making your projector.

Step 7: The assembly.
Places pieces #1, #3, #2, #4, side by side. Now carefully tape each piece together (pic 7), tape both sides to form a light-proof seal.

Step 8: Connecting the pieces.
Now connect the two sides together to form a box, tape these two pieces together( pic 8) you should have a complete box.

Step 9: Inserting the lens.
Insert the lens into the hole of #5 ( pic 9 ) make it flush with the slider and make sure it can’t move in its hole. With the fresnel lens, put the bumpy side facing the TV, use staples or tape to hold in place.

Step 10: Inserting the slider.
Insert the slider into the box about halfway, it should have a good tight fit, put it up to the light and see that light can’t get through except through the lens. You should be able to move the slider in and out of the box.

Step 11: Connect to the TV.
Connect the projector to the screen of the TV by using tape or any other light proof seal, now dim the lights, pull the curtains and turn it on, now use the slider to focus the picture, the further the TV from the wall the bigger the picture is, if the picture is reverse, place the mirror at 45° in front of the lens. If the image is upside down put your TV on its back and put the mirror at 45° infront of the lens.

Tips:

- Project the image onto a silver painted surface or beaded screen for better brightness
- Enclose the TV in a large box and project onto a white sheet –like a rear projection TV
